Maintenance and lifespan
Fifteen years and up is a realistic life on a properly installed surface, and looking after it is mostly a matter of keeping the pores open. Leaves, grass clippings and dust are what clog a permeable surface, so a blower or a stiff yard brush every few weeks does most of the work. A wash down once or twice a year handles the rest.
When you jet wash, use a wide fan tip and keep it a foot back. A turbo nozzle held close will strip resin off the top of the stone, and so will a wire brush or a strong solvent. Warm water and a soft brush deal with almost every spill. Nothing grows up through the surface, but seed can root in debris left sitting on it.
If a section ever does get damaged, resin bound is repairable. An approved installer can cut out and relay a patch using the same blend rather than replacing the whole surface.

My shaded patio turns green every year. Will resin bound actually stop that?
It changes the conditions that cause it. Algae and mildew need standing moisture and a porous surface to grip. Resin bound drains straight through into the sub base instead of holding a film of water, and every stone is coated in cured resin rather than exposed concrete paste. That makes it far less hospitable than a broom finished slab under a canopy. It is not sterile and nothing outdoors in this humidity is. Under heavy shade you will still rinse it occasionally, but you are washing a surface rather than fighting it every spring.
How does it hold up to Lowcountry salt air and humidity?
Well, and that is a large part of why coastal owners choose it. The cured resin binds every stone and seals the surface, so chloride laden air is not attacking exposed concrete and shallow reinforcement the way it does on a bare deck or apron. Humidity does affect installation, because the slab has to be dry and the moisture content has to be right before anything is laid, which is why an approved installer will test rather than guess. Once cured, humidity is not a problem for the surface at all.
I am in the Charleston or Beaufort historic district. Is this going to be an issue?
It is a step, not a wall. Charleston and Beaufort both operate architectural review for work that is visible from the public way, and a change of driveway, courtyard or walkway finish can fall inside that even though it is resurfacing rather than construction. What usually decides it is appearance, and resin bound has an advantage here because you choose the stone. A soft, natural aggregate blend reads much closer to traditional materials than a poured concrete finish. Ask the review board what they need and get product information and a sample board submitted early.
Does it survive Upstate winters in Greenville and Spartanburg?
Yes. The Upstate sees real freezes rather than the occasional cold snap you get on the coast, and permeability is what handles it. Water drains through the surface into the sub base instead of sitting in it and expanding when it freezes. There is no surface paste to scale and no sealer film to blister off. The thing that decides the outcome is the sub base, which needs to be porous and correctly compacted. If you use ice melt on a rare hard freeze, rinse the surface afterward like you would any exterior surface.
Our soil moves. Will the cracks come back through?
That depends on what is moving and how much. Lowcountry sand and fill settle, and Midlands and Upstate clay swells and shrinks through the year.
