Indiana concrete rarely fails in one go. It gives up a layer at a time. Why Indiana driveways scale, pit and break up at the street line
The damage is done by freezing water, not by cold air. Concrete is porous and it drinks. Rain, snow melt and the slush that drops off a car in the garage all soak into the top layer. When that water freezes it expands and pushes out through the face. Indiana does not freeze in November and stay frozen until March. It goes back and forth, week after week, and each pass takes a little more off the surface. That is scaling, and it turns a driveway from smooth to gritty to loose in about three winters once it starts.
Chemicals speed it up. Counties and INDOT run brine ahead of storms now, which is smart for the roads and hard on your concrete. Liquid de-icer clings to the surface, keeps it wet longer and drives chloride deeper than rock salt sitting on top. Strip away the marketing and resin bound is simple: natural stone, a clear UV stable binder, mixed to ratio and hand troweled over concrete that is sound enough to build on. What comes out is one seamless, fully permeable surface with nothing loose in it.
It is worth knowing the difference from resin bonded before you get quotes, because installers use the terms loosely. Bonded means loose stone broadcast onto wet resin: rough underfoot, sheds grit and does not drain through. Bound means the stone is in the mix. Only the second one gives you a flat, permeable, joint free finish.

Two questions decide whether an exterior surface lasts here. Can water get out of it, and what happens when chemicals land on it. Resin bound answers the first one directly. On de-icers, be practical. Nothing outdoors enjoys chloride, and anybody who tells you their surface does not care is selling. Winter care is simple and your installer will run through it before they leave. Use a plastic or poly shovel rather than a steel edged one. How a resin bound resurfacing job runs in Indiana

The number one cause of resin bound failure is not the resin. It is a weak or poorly compacted base. Any installer who wants to skip the prep and start mixing on day one is telling you something. Ask what they found when they surveyed your slab and what they plan to do about it.

Color and aggregate choices
Blend choice does more work than people expect. Two practical rules. Light blends run cooler in the sun and show dirt less than people fear, because the surface is textured rather than flat. Dark blends hide tire marks and oil drips on a driveway but get hot. If the surface is walked barefoot, go lighter. If it is parked on, go mid to dark.

Maintenance and lifespan
The realistic answer on lifespan is fifteen years or more, and the realistic answer on maintenance is that it needs less attention than the concrete it replaced. There is no sealing schedule, no re-sanding of joints and no annual staining. What it does need is to stay clear of debris so water keeps draining through.
Practically that means a blow down through leaf fall and a wash once or twice a year. Wide fan tip, held back, never a turbo nozzle. No wire brushes and no aggressive solvents, both of which attack the resin skin rather than the dirt. If a section ever gets damaged it is cut out and relaid in the same blend rather than replaced wholesale.

Our driveway is only fifteen years old and it is already flaking. Is it worth resurfacing?
Usually yes, and this is the most common call we get from Hamilton County. Scaling on a young slab is a surface problem, not a structural one. It comes from water and de-icer working the top layer, sometimes helped along by a finish that closed the surface up when it was poured. The concrete underneath can be perfectly sound. An approved installer will sound the slab, check for moisture and contamination and tell you straight. If the structure is good, an overlay is the cheapest way to get twenty more years out of it.
Does it hold up in the lake effect snow belt around South Bend?
That corner of the state is the hardest test in Indiana and the product does well there for the same reason it does well anywhere cold. It is permeable, so meltwater drains through into the sub base rather than sitting in the face of a slab overnight. More snow does mean more clearing, so the winter care matters more up north than it does in Evansville. Poly shovel, plow edge in rubber or poly set slightly high, de-icer used sparingly. Do that and the surface handles a Michiana winter without scaling.
The county brines the road before every storm. Does that affect the surface?
Brine is harder on bare concrete than on resin bound, which is part of why people call us. Liquid pretreatment clings, keeps the surface wet longer and pushes chloride deeper into an open concrete face. Resin bound puts a cured resin skin around every stone and over the slab below, so the chemical is not soaking directly into concrete and shallow steel. It is not immune and nothing is. Rinse the apron down in spring when the salt season ends, keep de-icer use light on your own property, and it will look right for years.
Can you do the driveway, the basketball pad and the front walk at the same time?
Yes, and it is usually the better way to buy it. Those three slabs are almost always different ages, different colors and different levels of tired. Doing them in one visit means one mobilization, one crew setup and one continuous finish instead of three patches that never quite match. A crew can lay up to 1,500 sq ft in a day once the base is ready, so a drive, pad and walk package is often two days on site. Ask your installer to price it as one job and as separate phases so you can see the difference.
Our slab sits on heavy clay and it moves. Will the new surface crack with it?
The new surface goes on top of the slab, so it moves with whatever the slab is doing. That is why the site survey decides the outcome more than the troweling does. Sound concrete with hairline and surface cracking is fine, and a bound layer handles minor movement far better than a rigid skim coat. Concrete that is actively heaving, rocking at a joint or broken through needs that fixed first. A good Indiana installer will tell you which one you have. Replacing one failed section and resurfacing everything over the top is still normally cheaper and faster than a full tear out.
How much does concrete resurfacing cost in Indiana?
For planning, resin bound installed over sound concrete typically runs somewhere between twelve and twenty five dollars per square foot. Where you land depends on square footage, how much repair the existing concrete needs first, access for mixing, drainage, edge detail and aggregate blend. Do I need city or county approval, and what about the sidewalk out front?
Indiana has no single statewide contractor license covering this trade, so the rules that apply to you are local. Many cities and counties require contractor registration, and work touching the apron, the curb cut or the public sidewalk often needs a permit because that strip may be in the right of way even though you mow it. Requirements differ between Indianapolis, Carmel, Fort Wayne and every other jurisdiction, and they change. Verify current requirements with your city or county building department, and with the state licensing board, before work starts.
When can it be installed, and how far ahead should we book?
The practical Indiana season runs from around April into early November.
