Water freezing inside the concrete does the damage, not the cold air. A slab is porous and it takes up water from rain, snow melt and the slush that drops off a truck in the garage. What resin bound resurfacing actually is
Resin bound is a mixed-on-site surface. Aggregate and a two part UV stable resin go into a forced action mixer at an exact ratio, and the resulting blend is troweled over your existing concrete at depth. It cures into a single seamless, porous sheet.
People confuse it with resin bonded, and the two behave nothing alike. Bonded work scatters dry stone onto a resin coat, so the surface is textured, sheds loose grit and holds water on top. Bound work carries the resin all the way around every stone, which is what makes it flat, fixed and free draining.

Maintenance and lifespan
Fifteen years and up is a realistic life on a properly installed surface, and looking after it is mostly a matter of keeping the pores open. Leaves, grass clippings and dust are what clog a permeable surface, so a blower or a stiff yard brush every few weeks does most of the work. A wash down once or twice a year handles the rest.
When you jet wash, use a wide fan tip and keep it a foot back. A turbo nozzle held close will strip resin off the top of the stone, and so will a wire brush or a strong solvent. Warm water and a soft brush deal with almost every spill. Nothing grows up through the surface, but seed can root in debris left sitting on it.
If a section ever does get damaged, resin bound is repairable. An approved installer can cut out and relay a patch using the same blend rather than replacing the whole surface.

Our county puts sand down with the salt. Does grit clog a permeable surface?
It collects, the same way it collects on any surface, but it does not ruin anything. Winter sand settles into the top of the stone matrix and some of it works its way out with rain. The maintenance is straightforward. Once the salt and sand season is over, blow or sweep the surface off, and if it has been a heavy winter give it a rinse. That keeps the pores open and the drainage working. It is a short job once a year, and it is far less work than sealing a concrete drive on a cycle.
We have a two hundred foot acreage driveway. Is resin bound realistic for that?
It can be, but be honest about the math. At typical installed ranges a very long drive becomes a large project, so most acreage owners phase it. Resurface the section nearest the house and the turnaround first, where appearance, foot traffic and drainage matter most, then extend toward the road in a later season. A crew can lay up to 1,500 sq ft a day once the base is ready, so phasing also keeps each visit short. Ask your installer to price the whole run and the first phase separately.
Frost goes deep here. Does that move the sub base under an overlay?
Frost moves whatever is under the slab, and resin bound follows the slab it is laid on. That is why the survey matters more than the trowel work. Sound concrete with hairline and surface cracking is fine, and a bound layer copes with minor seasonal movement far better than a rigid skim coat. Concrete that is actively heaving, rocking at a joint or broken through has to be dealt with first. A good Iowa installer will sound the slab, look at drainage and tell you plainly which sections are worth keeping.

Hail is hard on a lot of exterior materials. Resin bound is a bound stone matrix rather than a thin brittle coating, so it does not have a film to chip off the way a painted or epoxy surface does, and there are no individual units to crack like a tile. Severe hail can mark any surface and we are not going to claim otherwise. What we will say is that the failure you should worry about in Iowa is water and frost working the slab all winter, and that is the problem this actually solves.
When can it be installed in Iowa and how early should we book?
The practical season runs from around late April through October. Resin bound needs a dry substrate and temperatures inside the range on the binder data sheet, so a frozen or damp slab, a cold night or rain in the forecast all stop the job. Shoulder weeks depend on the actual forecast rather than the calendar. Book early.
