What actually destroys a Montana slab

The honest part is what it will not do. No surface beats frost heave on its own. Maintenance and lifespan
A correctly installed resin bound surface should give you fifteen years or more. The maintenance is genuinely light. Sweep or blow off leaf litter so the pores stay open, and give it a jet wash once or twice a year on a wide fan tip held back from the surface.
Spills come off with warm water and a soft brush. Do not use a stiff wire brush, harsh solvents or a turbo nozzle held close, because all three can chip the resin skin off the top of the stone. Weeds do not grow up through it, but windblown seed can occasionally root in surface debris, which is another reason to keep it swept.
If a section ever does get damaged, resin bound is repairable. An approved installer can cut out and relay a patch using the same blend rather than replacing the whole surface.

It holds up better than a troweled slab, and the reason is simple. Concrete scales because water sits in the surface and freezes there. Resin bound is permeable, so the water drains through into the sub base instead. There are no joints either, and joints are usually where a mountain slab starts to come apart. What no surface can do is beat movement in the ground beneath it. If frost is heaving the base, that has to be addressed first, and a straight installer will tell you so before quoting.
The county sands the roads all winter. Does that grit clog a permeable surface?
Some of it will sit on the surface, yes, and that is worth knowing before you buy. The fix is a spring clean down with a blower or a stiff brush, which takes a few minutes on a normal driveway and keeps the pores open. That is the honest maintenance answer for gravel country. What you do not get is grit grinding into open cracks and joints the way it does on concrete, because there are no joints and no exposed cement paste for it to wear away.
We have half a mile of gravel drive. What is actually worth surfacing?
Not the half mile. On ranch and acreage properties the sensible scope is the ground you walk on, park on and look at. The turnaround court by the house, the entry apron, the path to the door, the shop or barn apron. Those are where mud, dust and loose rock cause the actual problems. The approach road stays gravel, which is what it is good at. You get the benefit where it counts and you are not paying to surface a ranch road in bound stone.
How do smoke and ash seasons affect the surface or the work?
Ash settles on everything in a bad summer, and it rinses or sweeps off a bound surface without staining the way it can mark a porous sealed slab. For scheduling, smoke is a working conditions question rather than a material one. Crews will sometimes shift hours or push a lay by a day when air quality is poor. Rain and cold are what genuinely stop the work, since the slab has to be dry and the binder needs workable temperatures to cure properly.
Will mountain sun fade the color?
Not with the right binder specified. Resin Rock supplies a UV stable binder for anything sun exposed, which at Montana elevations means essentially every driveway, patio and walk. That is what keeps the stone looking like stone rather than going yellow. Fit a rubber or poly cutting edge and set the blade slightly high so it skims rather than scrapes. Stake the edges before the first snow so nobody catches a trim profile in the dark, and tell whoever plows for you before the season starts rather than after. For shoveling, use a poly or plastic blade instead of steel and push rather than chop. A snowblower is fine. Go easy with de-icer, clear the snow first, and sweep the grit off once in spring.
