Why Idaho concrete cracks, stains and wears out early
In the valley, start with the ground. A lot of Treasure Valley subdivisions sit on fill over clay and hardpan layers, and a slab poured before that fill has settled will crack no matter how good the mix was. Add flood and pressurized irrigation running all summer, which keeps the soil under a driveway wet for months and then lets it dry out hard in the fall. That wetting and drying cycle moves ground, and moving ground opens joints and cracks.
Then the water itself. Irrigation water here is hard and carries silt, and sprinklers throw it across driveways, walks and patios every night all summer. What resin bound resurfacing actually is
Think of it as stone held in suspension. Natural aggregate is mixed with a clear, UV stable resin binder in a forced action mixer, then troweled by hand over your prepared slab, where it sets into one continuous permeable sheet.
The word that matters is bound. Resin bonded is a different product entirely: loose stone thrown onto wet resin, which leaves a rough, shedding, non permeable finish and still needs drainage engineered separately. Resin bound locks every stone into the mix before it reaches the ground, so nothing comes loose and water goes straight through.

Two climates, one surface, and where the limits are
Resin bound suits both halves of Idaho for the same two reasons. It is fully permeable, so irrigation water, rain and snowmelt drain through into the sub base instead of ponding on the surface or freezing in it, and it is seamless, so there are no control joints to open up, stain or sprout weeds. A UV stable binder is the specification for anything sun exposed here, and in a high desert summer that means almost everything outdoors. Non UV binder is cheaper and belongs in genuine shade or on vertical work.
The limits are worth being clear about. Nothing laid on top of moving ground stops the ground moving, so if a slab is still settling or the soil is cycling wet and dry under it, the base and the drainage get addressed first. Permeability also depends on what is underneath, so where a permeable build up matters to you, say so early. How a resin bound resurfacing job runs in Idaho
Most residential driveways and pool decks are done in one to two days once the base is ready. Here is the sequence an approved Resin Rock installer follows.
Survey and base check
An approved installer checks whether your existing slab is sound enough to build on. Sound concrete is a huge cost saver because it becomes the base instead of landfill.
Prep and clean
Grinding, pressure washing, degreasing and crack treatment. Oil spots and old sealers have to go or the resin will not bond properly.
Edging and detailing

Color and aggregate choices

Maintenance and lifespan
Fifteen years and up is a realistic life on a properly installed surface, and looking after it is mostly a matter of keeping the pores open. Leaves, grass clippings and dust are what clog a permeable surface, so a blower or a stiff yard brush every few weeks does most of the work. A wash down once or twice a year handles the rest.
When you jet wash, use a wide fan tip and keep it a foot back. A turbo nozzle held close will strip resin off the top of the stone, and so will a wire brush or a strong solvent. Warm water and a soft brush deal with almost every spill. Nothing grows up through the surface, but seed can root in debris left sitting on it.
If a section ever does get damaged, resin bound is repairable. An approved installer can cut out and relay a patch using the same blend rather than replacing the whole surface.

Our neighborhood is on flood irrigation. Does that cause problems for a resurfaced driveway?
It is worth talking through with your installer before anything is quoted. Irrigation keeps the ground under a slab wet for months and then lets it dry out, and that cycle moves soil. The surface itself is not the issue, since resin bound is permeable and water passing through it drains rather than ponding. What matters is whether the slab underneath is stable and where the irrigation water actually goes. Expect a good installer to look at grading and drainage before talking about aggregate blends, and to check the slab for movement.
Our driveway is steep. Does resin bound work on a grade, and is it safe in winter?
Grade is common on foothill and canyon lots and it is one of the better reasons to consider this surface. Bound stone has real texture from the exposed aggregate rather than the polished feel of a steel troweled slab, and because it drains, meltwater is not sheeting down the slope and refreezing overnight into a glaze. Nothing is grippy under clear ice, and we will not pretend otherwise. But compared with smooth concrete on a shaded north facing drive, most people notice the difference immediately.
Our concrete is only six years old and it is already cracking. Is that normal here?
It is more common than it should be in the valley. A lot of newer driveways were poured quickly on fill that had not finished settling, so joints open, corners drop and hairline cracks widen inside a few years. Whether it can be resurfaced depends on whether the movement has settled down. Stable cracking, crazing and surface damage are all things an overlay handles. If sections are still moving, that needs addressing first. An installer should tell you which one you have before quoting.
We are in Coeur d'Alene. Is it a different job up north?
The product is the same, the conditions are not. North Idaho is wetter, snowier and shadier, so the problems are moisture, moss on damp paths, plow damage and a shorter working season rather than desert sun. Drainage and grip matter even more, and scheduling is tighter because the season opens later and closes earlier than it does in Boise. Book earlier than you think you need to, and expect an installer to talk about where snow gets pushed and stacked before they price the job.
It hits a hundred degrees here in July. Does the surface get too hot to walk on?
Color does most of the work. A light quartz or marble blend runs noticeably cooler underfoot than dark, dense concrete or a charcoal paver, and people feel that difference straight away around a pool or on a patio. No exterior surface is genuinely cool at three in the afternoon in a high desert summer and nobody should tell you otherwise. If barefoot comfort matters, say so at the quoting stage and choose the blend for it rather than picking on looks alone.

How do we handle snow, ice melt and plowing?
Shovel with a poly or plastic blade rather than steel, and push instead of chopping. A snowblower is fine. If you plow, use a rubber or poly cutting edge and set the blade slightly high so it skims rather than scrapes, and mark your edges before the first snow. Use ice melt sparingly. Chloride strips the paste out of concrete, which is part of why slabs flake, and a bound resin surface has none exposed. Clear the snow first, spread thin, and rinse or sweep in spring.
Contractors here are booked out for months. How soon can we get scheduled?
Idaho is busy and this trade is no exception, so plan ahead rather than calling when you want the work done. The valley season runs roughly April to October and the good crews fill it during the winter. North Idaho and the higher elevations are shorter again. The practical advice is to get quoted in winter or early spring, be flexible about the exact week, and get on a schedule rather than waiting for a gap.
