Freeze-thaw does the structural damage. Water sits in the surface of a troweled slab, freezes overnight, expands and pushes the cement paste off in flakes. Two features do the work here. Resin bound is fully permeable, so snowmelt and rain drain through into the sub base rather than sitting in the surface waiting for a cold night. And it is seamless, so there are no control joints for water, grit and movement to attack. Maintenance and lifespan
A correctly installed resin bound surface should give you fifteen years or more. The maintenance is genuinely light. Sweep or blow off leaf litter so the pores stay open, and give it a jet wash once or twice a year on a wide fan tip held back from the surface.
Spills come off with warm water and a soft brush. Do not use a stiff wire brush, harsh solvents or a turbo nozzle held close, because all three can chip the resin skin off the top of the stone. Weeds do not grow up through it, but windblown seed can occasionally root in surface debris, which is another reason to keep it swept.
If a section ever does get damaged, resin bound is repairable. An approved installer can cut out and relay a patch using the same blend rather than replacing the whole surface.

Often yes, but the system has to be part of the conversation from the very first visit. How should we clear snow, and can we use de-icer?
Shovel with a poly or plastic blade rather than steel and push instead of chopping. A snowblower is fine. If you plow, fit a rubber or poly cutting edge and set the blade slightly high so it skims rather than scrapes, and stake your edges before the first snow so nobody catches a trim profile in the dark. De-icer is fine used sparingly. Clear the snow first, spread thin rather than heavy, and blow or brush the sand and cinder off once in spring.
Our ground is clay and everything moves. Will this just crack again?
Tell your installer the history, because this is the question that decides the job. Resin bound is seamless and slightly flexible, so it handles minor movement much better than a jointed slab that tears itself apart at the control lines. It cannot stop expansive clay from swelling and shrinking. If your slab is actively lifting and dropping, the work starts with water. Grading, downspouts and drainage away from the slab come first. Sometimes the right answer is replacing one bad section and resurfacing the rest.
Why do sealers and coatings fail so fast here, and is this different?
Sealers fail because they are a thin film sitting on top of concrete, and in Wyoming that film gets hit by high altitude UV, blowing grit, freeze-thaw and de-icer all at once. Something has to give.
